South African Boerboels or South African Mastiffs are intelligent, reliable, obedient and have a very strong watch-dog instinct.
Weighing over 150 pounds, the Boerboel is an exceptionally strong and imposing dog.
If fully socialized and obedience trained at an early age, he can be a reliable and obedient family member "Boerboel" is African for "Farmer's Dog". Boerboels are self-assured and fearless but responsive to the needs of the family. The boerboel dog was specifically bred to be protective without being aggressive. They are loving, playful, even-tempered, athletic, all with strong protective instincts.
Boerboels make good guard dogs and will only accept visitors after being properly introduced. Only those people who know how to be the Alpha should own this breed. Boerboel's are classified by the AKC as a "working" dog and by the UKC as "Guardian" dog standards. A Boerboel in your home instinctively becomes the family pet. They especially bond to children - usually deciding the smallest family members are their own special personal responsibility and is to be looked after under any circumstances. Boerboels are very playful and affectionate and particularly likes to play games with his owner. The Boerboel has jaws that are so strong he often pops any ball he plays with, but he will continue playing with it anyway. The Boerboel is very gentle with all children and loves playing with them and having them βrideβ him like a horse. Because of being a relatively dominating breed, keep in mind, Boerboels are to be socialized at a very young age, hence the emphasis on being introduced to a family environment.
A well bred Boerboel should have a stable, reliable and obedient temperament. We have been breeding other breeds such as Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers since 1986 and believe that the South African Boerboel is unsurpassed as the best, all around protector/family pet that we have seen. We strive to breed a loving pet with an even temperament that is happiest in a family environment where they can put their protective instincts to great use as an extended member of your family. The average lifespan of a Boerboel is 12 years.
